Breakthrough In Scrapbooking: The Cricut Product Line

A few years ago, Provo Craft decided to really change the world of scrapbooking by releasing the Cricut product line.  The Cricut machine is a cartridge-based electronic die-cutting machine.  The Original Cricut Machine was released (also known as the Cricut Personal Electronic Cutter), with the ability to cut images onto paper using a 6 by 12- inch mat. The Cricut Machine is sold as a package with one cartridge (George and Basic Shapes), cutting blade, a cutting mat, and instruction manual. Several cartridges and accessories were released shortly after.

Cricut Expression Machine
Demand for the Original Cricut machine was overwhelming.   Customers were asking for a machine to cut larger images and more functionality, and Provo Craft responded by introducing the Cricut Expression Machine.  The Expression has several notable upgrades to the original machine: it is able to cut images up to 12 by 24 inches, has a large LCD screen that allows the user to see the next cut, an eight-way directional blade, and Fit-to-Page mode.  Provo Craft also introduced more cartridges and accessories to go along with the Expression.

Create Machine
Many Cricut users have upgraded to the Expression from the Original Cricut Personal Cutter.  However, scrapbookers were asking for a more portable machine to take along to crops and scrapbooking parties.  The Expression is a larger machine, meant to be left at home at a permanent workspace.  Once again, Provo Craft responded to demand by releasing the Cricut Create Machine.  The Create Machine has the functionality of the Expression, but is a much smaller unit with greater portability.  The Create can cut images up to 6 by 12- inches, similar to the Original machine.

Cartridges
Cricut machines require cartridges in order to cut images. All Cricut Cartridges are compatible in all three machines.  Cricut is continuously releasing new cartridges to keep up with scrapbooking demand.  There are now over 100 Cricut Cartridges available!  The cartridges have unique themes, with 4 main types:

Fonts- these cartridges contain letters and numbers with varying styles.  Some popular Font cartridges are: Plantin Schoolbook, Calligraphy, and Storybook.  These cartridges come in a peach-colored binder with a detailed instruction manual and unique keypad that corresponds to the cartridge.

Shapes- these are the most popular type of Cricut Cartridges, among the favorites are: Stretch Your Imagination, Wild Card, and Celebrations.  The Shapes cartridges come in a light blue-colored binder.
Classmate- these are catered towards educators- includes 50 States, Cursive 101, and My Community.  The Classmate cartridge binders are green.

Solutions- these cartridges were released after the other styles.  The Solutions cartridges are less expensive, and contain fewer images than the other cartridges listed above.  Some popular Solutions cartridges include Stone Script, Home Accents, and Camp Out.  These do not come in a typical storage binder, but do include instructions and a keypad.
Accessories

Cricut has introduced several accessory items to complement the Cricut machines' capabilities.  Some popular accessories include the Jukebox, Design Studio Software, adhesive vinyl, color inks, and stencil material.  These all help scrapbookers to enhance their creativity and produce amazing projects.

A Glimpse Into the Future
Provo Craft has just announced the release of the Cricut Gypsy, which allows users to upload all of their cartridge content into one place.  The Gypsy is a portable device with an interactive interface, similar to an Ipod.  Users can create designs anywhere, and simply plug into a Cricut Machine to cut.  This will be released just in time for the holidays.

Unleash Your Creativity with Cricut

The particular Cricut Expression is wonderful - a great product to have. I have found a lot of uses for this particular product outside of my scrapbooking desire. If you are a inexperienced, pro or just would like to have fun producing arts and crafts, this is the product to have. It has accurate cutting and it will even etch glass using the unique Armour Etch fluid, a long term glass scribing solvent. Together with an easy-view LCD display screen enables you to look at what you are typing that makes it ideal for card making, scrapbooking, and paper crafting. It is easily transportable and lightweight and bast of all, there is no computer needed - simply plug it in and begin creating.

It is a significant investment, but compared to other die cut systems it is actually a good deal. Just having the freedom to modify the measurements of the fonts is really worth the price. I agree with the fact that the cutting mat seems to last longer than Cricut states it will - which was one of my issues when I bought the machine. I didn't want to have to be frequently purchasing replacement mats - but I'm not so that's excellent. The Cricut Expression has so many new benefits yet it is still compatible with ink cartridges from earlier models. It is ready-to-go right out of the box and does not need a computer.

Features

* Cuts varied measurements:
* 1"–5.5" high and up to 11.5" long

Advantages

* The all-in-one-kit that is all set for use right out of the box!

Portability

This machine will go where I go. Simply just plug it in and turn it on! Its lightweight construct as well as comfortable handle make it easy to take to crops and functions. Compact and portable doesn't mean you are trapped with tiny shapes and lettersThere are absolutely no dies to store, and no software to install. Once you set it up, you are on your way to creating precise, eye-popping designs from major designers. Your creations are limited only by your imagination!

Cricut Expression Cutting Machine: My First Cricut Project

My Daughter & I
Surfing the internet one day for crafting products, one that really caught my eye was the Cricut Expression Machine.  I mentioned it to my daughter and she told me that she usually buys her party invitations, banners and other assorted items from a neighbor who has a Cricut machine.  I always wondered where she found such cute party supplies!  So, I told her I would buy the machine and together we could make our own party supplies, scrapbooks, etc.  She has baby number three on the way, and I have 4 other grandchildren.  This was a no-brainer for me.

What It Came With
The Cricut Cutting Machine came with 3 DVDs: two project DVDs and a basic How-to DVD.  It also came with a large cutting mat (they call it a tacky mat), 2 cartridges with hundreds of images, and other stuff you need.  Lisa decided to buy the Once Upon A Princess cartridge, since she will soon have three little girls.
Lisa and I opened the cutting machine, watched the how-to video and one of the project videos.  We put in the Princess cartridge and placed the overlay on the keyboard.  Next we loaded up some simple printer paper to practice on and pressed "Load Paper" button.  So far, so good.

Our First Project
With a birthday party coming up for our 5 year old princess, we decided to cut out some crowns to see how precise it would cut.  We adjusted the Cricut's speed for slower cutting, recommended for thinner papers.  We chose our image and image size then selected the auto fill option.  After double and triple checking to be sure we have everything set, we hit the Start button.

The crowns came out perfectly!  We just had to keep trying different images.  I've already started on new photo albums for the grandchildren to give everyone at Christmas.  Lisa is cutting out shapes and letters for her scrapbooks.  So many shapes, so little time.
